As European Green Capital 2015, Bristol city centre is the home of 2 life-size whale sculptures, designed and built by Cod Steaks and initiated by Artists Project Earth (APE). The art shows two whales swimming together in a sea of 70 000 upcycled plastic bottles. The whales are made of natural, harvested willow material.
The whales are intelligent and charismatic animals, and as a symbol of the oceans these sculptures aim to raise awareness of the fragility of ocean life and the increasing human threats facing our wildlife.
ESOS Energy were invited to the opening event and were again disappointed to hear the facts of water pollution which humanity commits against our planet:
Britons purchase approximately 13 billion plastic bottles of water each year
The amount of plastic bottles end up in the oceans could fill the size of 8 Wembley Stadiums
Only 25% of plastic bottles are recycled
An estimated 5 trillion bottles are floating in our oceans
The Bristol Whales send a powerful message about detrimental impact of plastics in the ocean and a great addition to the exciting cultural programmes of Bristol.
We highly recommend to visit At-Bristol’s Millennium Square and make a pledge to swap your plastic bottles for reusable ones. You can also submit a virtual message in a bottle to appear on the At Bristol Big Screen.
