Since 2008, Display Energy Certificates and Advisory Reports have been required for all public buildings with total useful floor area over 1,000m2. Occupiers of public buildings are probably aware that DECs require renewal every 12 months and Advisory Reports every 7 years. Where the building has a total useful floor area of between 250m2 and 999 m2, the DEC and Advisory Reports are valid for 10 years.
The Advisory Report is designed to help building owners and occupiers improve the energy efficiency of their buildings, aiming for better DEC ratings each year. It is important to regularly check expiry dates on your reports to ensure compliance with the legislation is maintained. The penalty for failing to display a DEC where required is £500 and the penalty for not having the Advisory Report is £1,000.
